|Bar code printers are used to output bar code data in printed form. Technologies available for bar code printers include direct thermal, thermal transfer, ink jet, laser, LED or LCD, dot matrix, and line printers.|
|Direct thermal printers output very sharp, clear text and graphics. It uses heat to set images on noncurling, smudge-proof, heavy stock thermal paper.|
|Laser bar code printers use a laser beam to produce an image on a drum. The light of the laser alters the electrical charge on the drum wherever it hits. The drum is then rolled through a reservoir of toner, which is picked up by the charged portions of the drum. Finally, the toner is transferred to the paper through a combination of heat and pressure. This is also the way copy machines work.|
|Line bar code printers contain a chain of characters or pins that print an entire line at one time. They are very fast, but produce low-quality print. Line matrix printers use the same technology as dot matrix printers, but are much faster for greater workloads.|
|Ink jet bar code printers spray ink droplets through a nozzle onto the page. There are two basic types of ink jet printers: thermal and piezo.|
|LCD or LED bar code printers are similar to a laser printer, but they use liquid crystals (LCDs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) rather than a laser to produce an image on the drum.|
|Dot matrix printer produces characters and illustrations by striking pins against an ink ribbon to print closely spaced dots in the appropriate shape. Dot matrix printers can print to multi-page forms (carbon copies).|
